Training with Endless Pools: Triathletes’ Success at Rio

Triathletes Success at Rio by training with Endless Pools

The Brownlee brothers, Alistair and Jonathan, take sibling rivalry to new heights. The triathletes embraced just past the finish line at the conclusion of the triathlon at the Olympics in Rio having blown away the rest of the competition.

Gold-medal winning Alistair and silver-medal winner Jonathan have both faced injuries that jeopardised their training before Rio and previously, in 2012, before their home London Olympics. To recover from injuries as quickly as possible and ensure that they are race fit, the brothers use an Endless Pool swim spa.

Exercise at Home in a Swim Spa

It’s no great secret that becoming Olympic medal winners is no easy feat. The journey to the podium is filled with grit, hard-work, determination and set-backs. Both of the Brownlee brothers have experienced injuries as part of training, it’s part of the job. Before the London Olympics Alistair injured his ankle and was told he wouldn’t be able to run for 12 weeks so he decided to use an innovative Endless Pool.

Alistair was unable to put any weight on his injured ankle so trained on an underwater treadmill in an Endless Pool. It allowed him to complete his normal workout without the same impact on his ankle. He was able to be back out running on the road in 7/8 weeks, rather than the initial 12 weeks that was thought.

The Endless Pool is incredibly convenient for the brothers, who have had a model installed at their local cricket club in Leeds. It’s fantastic for both rehabilitation work and day-to-day training, allowing them to build up their fitness and slowly increase their mileage. They train for 35 hours a week on average and the Endless Pool allows for easy, convenient exercise that is private and without the hassle of booking lanes at the local swimming pool!

The unique, industry-leading current offered by Endless Pools create an environment that is more like open water than swimming pools as the triathletes can swim uninterrupted without having to complete a ‘tumble turn’ at the end of each length. Their Endless Pool is equipped with a mirror and video system, allowing their coaches to analyse their stroke.
